When you create a challenge, Word Bout generates a short 6-character code (for example, 03R 91U) that encodes the word length, number of rounds, challenge-mode status, token allowance, and a random seed. Share that code with a friend — when they enter it, their device generates the exact same puzzle sequence locally. You're not connected through any server; the code itself is the whole game. Whoever uses the fewest guesses across all rounds wins.
No. Word Bout works entirely offline. The word list is bundled with the app and all puzzle generation happens on your device. You can play solo or challenge a friend without ever connecting to a network.
You can play with 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7-letter words. Each length has its own curated list of common answer words and a larger dictionary of accepted guesses. Statistics are tracked separately for each length, so you can build streaks in your favorite mode.
Challenge Mode enables three extra restrictions for tougher play: green (correct) letters must stay in their correct position in future guesses, yellow (found) letters must appear in your next guess, and letters already ruled out (grey) are blocked from input. You can toggle Challenge Mode as a whole or enable each restriction individually in Settings.
There are three power-ups: Eliminate Half greys out roughly half the unused letters on the keyboard, Reveal locks in one correct letter, and Extra Guess adds one more attempt after you've used all your guesses. Each one costs a token. You start with 6 tokens, and you earn more by hitting streak milestones: 3-streak gives +1, 5-streak gives +2, 10-streak gives +3, 15-streak gives +4, and every 10 wins after that gives +5.
No ads. No in-app purchases in version 1.0. The app is free and fully featured as-is.
All stats, streaks, tokens, and settings are stored locally on your device. Nothing is transmitted to external servers. Word Bout does not collect analytics, use third-party tracking SDKs, or require an account. See our privacy policy for full details.
Yes — open Settings and tap "Clear All Statistics." This resets every word length's games, streaks, and power-up counts, and gives you a fresh 6 starter tokens.
Double-check that the code is 6 characters (letters and numbers). The display uses a space in the middle for readability (for example 03R 91U), but both formats are accepted. Codes are case-insensitive. If it still won't join, make sure both players are on the same app version — codes generated by future versions may include new features.
